The Westland District Council was formed in 1989 from the amalgamation of Westland County Council and Hokitika Borough Council. It is a territorial local authority governed by the Local Government Act 2002. The Westland District Council is responsible for a wide range of services for their district include looking after their community, local roads, water, sewerage and refuse collection, libraries, parks, recreation services, local regulations, community and economic development, and town planning.
